On the evening of September 14, 2026, a federal court issued a nationwide preliminary injunction temporarily blocking the New Rule, Establishing a Fixed Time Period of Admission and an Extension of Stay Procedure for Nonimmigrant Academic Students, Exchange Visitors, and Representatives of Foreign Information Media, which was scheduled to take effect on September 15. As a result, the current Duration of Status (D/S) framework remains in effect for F-1 students and J-1 exchange visitors. While this decision provides temporary relief, it is not a final ruling, and the litigation remains ongoing. Students should be aware that the injunction could be modified or lifted as the case proceeds, potentially allowing the rule to be implemented with limited notice. We anticipate additional guidance and updates on or around the next scheduled court hearing on October 2 and will continue to share information as it becomes available.
